It is also "Frugal Friday" @ Life as Mom. To see all the frugal tips click here.
OK. So....do you sometimes buy things that are WAY too expensive, but you really do need them, so you buy them????? GUILTY. I have decided that I am going to hang around 20 or so plates (small in size) at the new mansion. (Movers come on Monday...biting nails....wheezing...heart racing...what will get broken?) I digress. I also decided that I do not want to use the standard metal plate hanger...the ones that look like this..
I decided to go with the round stick on kind of plate hanger. The ones that look like this..
These things are great. I found them at Hobby Lobby and bought them up. Now...here is the less then frugal part of the story...these little gems are VERY EXPENSIVE. We are talking 3-5 bucks per. But, because I needed them, and because I couldn't think of a way to achieve this type of hanging without them, I bought them....lots of them. Content with my purchase, except for the expense...I went on home. Then, strolling through Dollar Tree, I came upon this... A Package of 8 cloth hangers. They are adhesive on the back and have a metal hook. I think that you are supposed to use them on the wall. But, if you put one on the back of your plate and then use a twist tie, you so....have a plate hanger. See???????????????
Here is the plate with the cloth hanger stuck on....
Here is the cloth hanger with the twist tie attached. Just make a loop with it.
Here is me, holding the plate by the twist tie. Then, you just put your nail in the wall, and hang it up.
Tada...invisible plate hanger. This version costs 12 1/2 cents per hanger. Much better on the budget. Now...I wouldn't try this with a jumbo plate or platter, but it will do nicely for my purposes.
Needless to say...I am returning my 60.00 plate hangers and heading back to the Dollar Tree. I just have to eat 20 loaves of bread to get all those twist ties. Ha.
Have a great weekend ladies.
Laura

great idea! :)
ReplyDeleteOne little package of cheap-o trash bags and you'll have all the little twist ties you need!
ReplyDeleteAnd if you ever DO need to hang something really heavy...check out Ook Hooks. Best things I ever found! I had a huge iron scroll thingy I wanted to hang above our bed and didn't want it to fall off the wall and bludgeon us in our sleep.....Ook Hooks to the rescue! And they leave really small holes.
What a great idea..thanks for sharing. I have traditional plate hooks and some don't even work that well. The plate sometimes doesn't hang well. For sure I am going to have to try this!
ReplyDeleteBrenda, I have never heard of those hooks. I will have to look for them. I better look here though. The new place only offers walmart and dollar tree. Although, those are two of my favorite places. ha. Laura
ReplyDeleteWhat a nifty idea! I love dollar stores! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to look into these things.
ReplyDeleteHope you show us all the plates when you get them hung. Great idea!!

ReplyDeleteOhhh...Ahhh... I'm liking it very much. I have several plates in my dining room and tole painted trays in my kitchen. I might re-do them with your tip of the day.

What a great idea - I've seen those many times but wasn't sure what could be done with them.

How wonderful. Wish I'd have read this post 3 years ago when I hung my plates!

Great idea, and so much nicer than those metal ones - which you would imagine aren't too great for your plates too.
ReplyDeleteWonderful thrifty solution!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea and great on the pocket book!
ReplyDeletekeep it up Laura...I would have gotten the ones at Hobby Lobby just b/c you mentioned them. This is going the extra mile!
ReplyDeleteAren't you smart! I just bought those disc hangers recently. Hadn't even ever seen them before. They are so great!
ReplyDeleteThat's great. Thanks for the tip.
ReplyDeleteHow about if we just snip that hook part off and use the hole in the sticky hanger?
I'll look for those at the dollar store.

ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, this is a fabulous idea! I have several plates that I haven't hung yet because I didn't want to fork out the $$. Thanks so much for sharing! And congrats on being featured on Tip Junkie!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea... I too have loads of plates, and now thanks to you, they'll be on the wall without breaking my budget!
ReplyDeletegreat idea!! thankis! I hope you have a fabulous day!! hugs!! Britt :-)
ReplyDeleteI used these on the back of some 4" clay talavera tiles. Since the tiles are a little porous, I found that the adhesive on the back was not sufficient to stick on. I solved that by putting "Gorilla" glue on the back and fixed it in place by clapping it until the glue dried (waited full 48 hours). Then I clipped off the hook part and hung the tile using the small metal hole to hang it on a small nail. They've been all hanging there with no issues for 4 months.
ReplyDeleteclamping the hanger thing on the back of the tile (not clapping) :-)
ReplyDeletethank you soooooooooooooooo much i have looking for these!!!!!!!!!!!!!
